It seems like our South Dakota puddle duck is adjusting to Minnesota puddles just fine. Oh, and apparently he is pretending to be a moose, which I suppose is appropriate for our new place, too.

Right after our trip to Bismarck, I broke my middle finger on my left (dominant) hand. It halted all progress on all crafting fronts...no crocheting, knitting, cutting fabric (I couldn't hold my rotary cutter), or quilting (couldn't wear my gloves). Sigh. It was a long 6 weeks. I would like to say that my housekeeping improved with all of the free time, but it didn't really happen. ;)

But, I am brace-free for the last couple of weeks and things are feeling better. My first project back was a set of bow ties for my little guys for Easter. They turned out pretty cute. It helps that they were worn by cute little boys too. :)
We had some really nice weather this year and we did our egg hunt on Saturday in the yard. I am pretty sure daddy is going to have to start burying eggs to make it hard enough for Timothy. We even played a few rounds because it was just SO much fun to find them!
We had tons of fun and hours of pool play. Poolside rooms and a table on the deck meant a pretty stress free time and no lugging pool stuff back and forth from our rooms. It also meant hearing arcade games all night, but a quick room change helped everyone get better rest on night two.
I came across the Be My Neighbor quilt along (it is put out by Moda) this past fall and just thought it was cute. I had scored a half yard bundle of fabric (Farmhouse) from my local quilt shop's clearance room at 50% off and I was itching to cut into it. It seems to be a good match so far, after I threw in a few more coordinating greens that were absent in my bundle. I haven't followed a pattern like this in a long time, so it is a refreshing exercise of accurate piecing, aka my seam ripper has been used. :)

Once upon a time, we moved in the middle of winter and the boxes of canned goods froze on the moving truck, thawed upon arrival, and then mostly tossed because the contents separated into gross, watery textures. Sigh.

This summer has been filled with the usual canning of garden produce and berries from the area and we have been blessed with eating lots of those goodies now. When the 4H groups were going around selling fruit this fall, I planned for some new canning experiences. After Christmas, I hopped online to find a good recipe for citrus and came upon a mastery challenge at Food in Jars! January is marmalade month and I like a good quilt along, so a preserving challenge? Sounds good to me! :)

I tried my hand at the Three Citrus Marmalade:

New techniques for me included zesting entire fruits and then processing all of that fruit down to remove the pith and membranes inside. But overall, not too bad of a process. The hardest part was watching the thermometer creeping up, waiting for the magical mark of 220F.

Finished product! The left jars are the first batch and you can see I got the peels to suspend in the syrup a little better (it is also a little more set), but I am really happy with the result. We enjoyed orange chicken to celebrate and it is also amazing in oatmeal. Also canned that day, the box of pears that I ordered along with the citrus. Cinnamon Pear Jam and Pear Cranberry Jam, both from Food in Jars as well, are old favorites that all four of us enjoy.
After receiving a butterfly kit from his cousin for Christmas, Timmy finally got caterpillars in the mail. Every time he saw the box in the closet he wanted to get his "new friends" and I had to explain that we needed to wait until the snow melted and the air warmed. The only hiccup in the process was the holdup in the mail; he had to watch an extra couple of days before they eventually got to our house. We had great fun watching them grow and eventually hang from the lid.

And welcomed 4 of the 5 butterflies into our yard yesterday (one is still hanging in their chrysalis). These are Painted Lady butterflies that come with the kit. I couldn't get a picture through the netting, but Timmy really enjoyed watching their "tongues" unroll and drink from the orange slice we fed them.
Saturday morning we headed over to the Egg Scramble that our town puts on. So impressed that he was smiling despite crying his eyes out 10 minutes previously because the Easter bunny got a little too close. :) I have no aspirations for a happy santa or bunny picture with this kid ever.

Our lilac bushes are loaded with blooms! I am praying for no deep freezes in the coming weeks, a very real danger for our area so we can enjoy our bushes after waiting for 3 years! All of the lilies are several inches high, bushes are all leafing out, and the rhubarb is a good 8 inches tall.
Egg hunt in the backyard following church. Everyone indulged in our annual Easter afternoon nap. It got really warm here and Timmy spent the rest of the afternoon digging holes in the garden. Only a couple more weeks and we will be planting. :)
This pretty much sums up anything really interesting that has been happening in our house. Jared is in the midst of Lent services at church; I haven't been up to much other than dishes, laundry, and trying to purge a little as the spring cleaning itch has hit. Timmy leads a much more entertaining life...

"School" - Timmy inherited an old school desk from his cousin Cole and likes to pretend to do school. He could really care less about coloring, but loves a good dot-to-dot, maze, or matching game. I am disappointed to announce that I think he has decided on a hand and it is not his left.

"Milk" - He has been transitioning night time pump drips to the daytime. We are up to 3 8oz servings a day, which means he is only getting 12 oz at night, which means Jared and I are sleeping through the night for the first time in 4 years. It has been life changing!
"Narwhal Hunting" - He is on a narwhal kick. He also sings songs as he sails in his boat. I think he would make a perfect sea captain.
"More Dirt" - There are no plants in the garden yet, but Timmy is taking up tilling the entire plot by hand very seriously. And I am doing more laundry. :)
Well, I kind of fell flat on my face this week with sewing. I made a cute little drawstring bag for my little knitting projects and then I got sick, Timmy got sick, and then Jared got sick. We were just a lovely family of sickies last week. :) All are better now and I am already halfway through the final week of this challenge and doing better.

I used this tutorial, again. :)

It is just the nicest pattern and the cutest little bag. I really need to buy

the pattern so I can make all of the different sizes.

And now my little zip pouch that holds my knitting tools matches my bigger bag and my smaller bag!

I got some more done on my sock, too. I survived the heel and gusset, so on to the toe I will be marching!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489221533451664492noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3194444406972949102.post-83782081143746690512015-02-16T10:43:00.000-06:002015-02-16T10:43:04.301-06:00Week 2 of 4x7 Challenge

So, I got some stuff done this week! Woohoo! The weight of my self-inflicted project due dates lifting off of my shoulders feels good.

Small Christmas quilt - done. It measures 35"x42", perfect for throwing over the top of a chair or using with a wheelchair. Not sure where this is going yet, but I think my mom has her eye on it and she gets first dibs. :) I tried a new border pattern and it isn't perfect, but I was really happy with it for the first time.

I love the back. :) It is another gray day here, so it looks yellow, but it matches the cooler tan colors of the front.
Baby Quilt - done. 2 out of 4 piles of half triangle squares used up! This is just a little guy, measuring up at 28"x28", but it would be great to roll up in the diaper bag. If it doesn't find a home by this summer, it is a strong candidate to donate for our Project Linus collection our quilt guild does.
A pretty little ring of posies, waiting to go on a workbag for myself. I went to get a solid gray from our local fabric store and they were all out, so hopefully it comes soon so I can finish this up before the end of the month! (These are 3/4" hexagons if you are curious)
In other crafty news, I learned how to knit a sock! It isn't a whole sock, but I did it really larger so I could really see what I was doing and I made it through the heel and gusset steps, so it will be ripped out and rewound for another project. So exciting! (does anyone else have random stickers stuck to their coffee table?)
Here is my first official sock, thanks to my secret pal at quilt guild. She knows I like yarn, too, and got me this beautiful sock yarn for my birthday and with it the motivation to get my first pair done. It is going to take forever with size 1 needles, but it will be great project to take on the road!

And on a sad note...I got ready to baste my swoon quilt this morning and my 90" backing that I bought last spring was not cut correctly and is only 80" wide. My quilt is 82". Sigh. On the plus side, the backing is a neutral tan swirl, so it will work for something else. On the negative side, this quilt isn't going to get done this week.
So, I am doing this challenge over at Berry Barn Designs to sew everyday for 30 minutes during the month of February (hence the name, 4x7 challenge) and this is my progress report. I am a little late posting this because I was waiting for nicer weather outside for pictures, but it has been dreary so the colors are off. I guess you take what you can get during the winter!

First, I used up one set of half triangle squares to make this cute baby blanket. I ordered some extra border fabric for the coordinating larger quilt, so this thing will get some borders and a scrappy backing as soon as I get figure out how to use the fabric up in the best way. I am hoping to have this basted in the next couple of days. I don't have any plans for this quilt, but it will be handy to have one on hand for giving. :)

Second, I used up another pile of half triangle squares and made a lap quilt. It is 36" x 42" which happens to be the perfect size for a wheel chair or a really small throw. It is basted and ready to quilt, which will happen hopefully this week or next.

My swoon quilt is put together and bordered! Since I took this picture, the border fabric came in the mail and I have it attached (I opted to eliminate the white borders between the blocks and add a colored one around the edge. I love it!). At some point I will get down on my hands and knees and get this thing basted so it can be quilted, too. It is a big quilt (84"x84") so that is a pretty big undertaking and one that involves the moving of furniture to get a big enough space to lay the whole thing out! Tigger is thrilled that I am invading her space.

Finally, a little clamshell pillow for my living room chair! I have been following along on this challenge, but not really inspired to take on a whole quilt, so a pillow will do nicely. You attach the clamshells one row at a time, so it looks a little funny now, but I think it will turn out super cute. Don't mind the wrinkles, apparently I left it out in the living room and it was in Timmy's way, so he crammed it behind the couch cushions for a couple of hours. :)

Not too shabby for a week, now on to week 2! I have already made some good strides with the quilts above and I am hoping to get that baby quilt ready to quilt and then switch my machine and brain over into quilting mode. I have a pile of quilts ready to go! February quilt goal = finish this Swoon quilt!

I won the fabric 2 summers ago (yay!) and put the blocks together last winter during my quilt guild retreat (yay!). They have been sitting in a bag since (boo!), can you tell?!?! Looking forward to having this one out of to-do pile! I am doing a bunch of piecing this week with the above projects, making a couple more knitting bags, waiting for some border fabric I just ordered for the Swoon and winter quilts, and then switching my machine (and brain) over to quilting mode and kicking out several projects. I have joined a challenge to sew 30 minutes everyday during February. It is supposed to be selfish sewing - projects for yourself - but honestly, getting my to-do pile will bring some serious relief as I sometimes stress about my self-imposed timelines.

Yay for being Type A. :)

I just loved the other Honky Tonk quilt I did last spring/summer that I decided to do another (that, and someone saw it and loved it and bought it!). :) If you are counting, the body of the quilt is made with 30 strips from a jelly roll and I had enough brown guitars for a border along with a skinny floral border. I squeaked out the back and binding with just a few inches of binding to spare and used up the rest of the coordinating fabric I had. If you tally up my leftovers I maybe have a fat quarters worth of fabric left, but no big pieces; not even enough to make a little pouch! No close up, but I quilted it with a loopy meandering line and sewed the binding on by machine.
We hosted our circuit Pastors' meeting, wives and kids included. While the men met after lunch and church, we took the kids bowling. It was a blast! Timmy, David, and Joseph were a hoot to watch, cheering each other on and learning how to take turns...

My mixer is getting some love this week! Midway on my mixer cover and I am really excited! The bottom piece in the picture is getting a quilt as you go treatment and using up a lot of my scraps. The mixer will be getting a bowl appliquéd on soon and then the whole thing put together. I had a piece of flannel leftover from backing another quilt that will be the liner. So luxurious. :)
Honky Tonk (number 2) is getting pieced. By the end of the weekend, it will hopefully have borders and basted onto a back and batting. I think this quilt will pretty much use up every last piece I have of this fabric line. The binding might get a little creative...
After many, many, many failures in the kitchen with yeasted recipes, I found one that I didn't mess up...pita bread! Finally! Here is the recipe I used.

And a highlight of having lots of snow on the ground: Snow ice cream! With wind chills down in the negative double digits a few days ago when we did this, this treat was COLD!
The temperatures this month have been very low and with winter winds blowing strong, the wind chill has hardly been above zero. Snow piles around town continuously grow without any warmth in-between snowfalls to keep their height checked. We have all felt a little trapped this past week...

But we have tried to the best with what has been dished up, including moving Jared's drawing table into the nursery (we aren't using the room anyway) and Timmy has been joining in. Jared has a goal of drawing one picture a month...

He has also discovered the joy of warm feet and conquered his fear of putting his feet into slippers. This is quite a feat when we think about the past and how he would just gag when his feet were on weird textures or his hands were put into mittens...
We had a nice day planned out today and it kinda all went out the window. Jared ended up needing to go to Sioux Falls to visit a parishioner in the hospital (6 hours round trip) and Timothy woke up with a stuffed head and then developed a fever by mid morning. I decided to do some birthday sewing for myself. :)

I made myself a knitting bag! Super easy pattern and worked up quickly. Here it is (free!) if you want to make one yourself. Thanks to Eric and Michelle, my brother-in-law and sister-in-law, for the gift card for Christmas and my birthday. Michelle and I had a great trip to the fabric store where I picked this fabric out. Yay!

I also made a matching zipper pouch for my accessories. Here is that tutorial.
Here is a shot of the inside. Perfect for a medium project or a couple of little ones.

Here are the projects going on right now:

A Star Wars scarf for my sister, Mindy. I have 52 rows done. 388 more to go.

Seriously.

I am almost done with what I call the fighting kangaroos.

My husband just rolls his eyes. :)

And my sweater is slowly growing! I have about 18 inches done so far, another 26 inches to go! It is kind of boring, but perfect for when I don't want to count stitches.

Happy 2015 and Happy Making!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489221533451664492noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3194444406972949102.post-23987991352892807462014-12-31T15:41:00.000-06:002015-01-02T15:41:52.011-06:00Last minute finish

I got the binding on just in time to count this as my final finish of 2014! My normal quilt holder is gone for the day, so you get the draped-quilt-on-the-couch shot. Combined with the bright sun bouncing off of the snow, it makes for a less than ideal photo, but you'll get the idea.

I quilted it in wavy sections across the quilt. The swirls are the newest pattern that I have been working on and they are getting better, although the hardest part was quilting them on top of fabric that is really busy...it made it harder to see and so my spacing got off in some places. Jared doesn't seem to mind (or really care) as he is curled up with it, so I am not going to let them bother me. :)

I made this super cute manicure bag for one of our Sunday school teachers (they are awesome and get extra love in my book). She loved it. Yay!

Timmy picked out blue sparkly nail polish which she loves and she has room for 3 more along with a zipper pocket for a few supplies. (here is a link if you want the pattern)

And I forgot to take pictures of the other Sunday school teacher's bag (a drawstring bag and crochet hook holder), the finished table runner, and my sister and brother-in-law's quilt. I also am short one binding strip to finish my husband's quilt that he got on Christmas without the binding on. Yay!

At least I still have my head on my shoulders. :)

I'll take some pictures of Jared's quilt as soon as I buy one more piece of 2.5"wide fabric. From the store in Spearfish where I bought the fabric back in June. I already called and they still have some on the bolt (score!) and set it aside for me. I love how helpful quilters are to each other!

And isn't this the cutest?!?!? Timmy is working on his name and I think he did pretty well tracing the letters I put on each light. I think he is finally leaning towards a dominate hand and he is going to be on team lefty with me! Yay! :)
